Frozen Faceoff

Welcome back from break. Hope you all had a relaxing time at home and are ready to dive into these last two weeks of the semester. In case you're looking for something fun to do this weekend before finals start, why don't you head on down to Ann Arbor for the Frozen Faceoff!
For the past couple of weeks now the buzz around campus has been about the Frozen Faceoff, but what is it exactly? Well, here are the details. It's the first ever NCAA D3 outdoor men's hockey game. Our Adrian College Bulldogs will be taking on Concordia University on Saturday, December 4, at 9.30am in the University of Michigan's Big House. Because the stadium is so big, we're trying to break the world record for number in attendance at a D3 hockey game. The first 5,601 fans to arrive will receive a free winter hat! The game is also free to Adrian, Concordia, and UofM students. The cost of admission is $10 for others in attendance, and $2 for children under 12. If you're an AC student and you need a ride to the game, we've got ya covered. For $5 you can take a bus provided by the college. Hurry though, today is the last day you can purchase a ticket for the bus. They will be on sale between 11.30am and 12.3pm in Ritchie Market place.

Don't miss out on this fun opportunity to be apart of history! Hope to see everyone there!

Support Your Basketball Team!

Tomorrow both the women's and men's basketball team will be playing at Siena Heights and they're looking for student support. Last year Siena's student section blew ours out of the water, and it was a home game for us. This year we want to do the same to them. Today during lunch in Caine you can sign up to go to the game. For $5 you will be bused over to Siena Heights and you will receive a bunch of goodies including a t-shirt!

I know break starts on Tuesday night and most of you are going to want to head home for the evening, but try to make an effort to support your fellow students. And wouldn't you like to see our student section blow Siena's students section out of the water this year? I know I would.

Bulldog Hockey Tonight!

Adrian College students and staff, are you looking for something fun to do tonight? Well, don't miss the Adrian Men's NCAA Hockey Team take on the Czech Republic under 18 team at 7pm in the Arrington Ice Arena. This game is going to be a Gold-Out, meaning make sure you wear gold to support your Adrian Bulldogs. The AC Hooligans will be there, so if you have one, wear your gold Hooligans shirt.

I'm sure this game is going to be a very exciting one. We've all seen how great our hockey team is. Now they're being paired against a team that comes from a great hockey area, so it's sure to be a good game.

I haven't been to an AC hockey game this year which is rare for me because hockey is one of my favorite sports. I can tell you now that I don't plan on missing this one. I suggest that you don't miss it either. Cost of admission is free to AC students with their IDs. For community members the cost is only $10. Hope to see you all at the rink tonight!

Alpha Phi's Red Dress Gala Successful

On Saturday evening Alpha Phi hosted their fourth annual Red Dress Gala to benefit the Alpha Phi Foundation to promote cardiac care. For those of you that don't know about the Alpha Phi Foundation here's a bit of information.
  • Mission Statement: Alpha Phi Foundation empowers women to be generous givers. We raise and award funds for programs that advance leadership development, encourage academic excellence, improve women’s heart health, support sisters in need and educate about the value of philanthropy.
  • Vision: As a preeminent philanthropic organization, Alpha Phi Foundation is recognized for the strength of our endowment and for innovation in cultivating and sustaining donor participation. We strive to be philanthropy-of-choice among our members, with every Alpha Phi supporting the Foundation
The night consisted of dinner, a silent auction, a red dress fashion show by the seniors, and some dancing. Through the support of family, friends, and alumni Alpha Phi was able to raise more money than expected to donate to the Alpha Phi Foundation. We even had one basket, a Detroit Red Wings basket, that went for over $600.

Thanks to Danielle Prielipp, her committee, all the other sisters of Alpha Phi, family, and friends for making this years Red Dress Gala so successful.

Promoting Prematurity Awareness

The month of November is Prematurity Awareness Month. Throughout this week, Adrian College Circle K will be selling wristbands (during lunch and dinner in Caine) from the March of Dimes to raise awareness of premature births with all the proceeds going to the March of Dimes to provide help for premature babies. For more information about March of Dimes or premature babies, visit www.marchofdimes.com

At the left is what the wristbands look like. They're $2 each, and come with a card to write you name on. The cards will be displayed in Caine for the rest of the month, to show who supported the March of Dimes and Prematurity Awareness Month. If you don't want a bracelet, but still want to show your support, you can purchase the card for $1 with the proceeds going to March of Dimes.

Not only will Circle K be selling these wristbands, they'll also be holding a Dime War between the classes. Set up in the Caine Student Center are jars labeled for each of the classes. Dimes are the only positive coin (+10) and all the others are negative (-1, -5, and -25). Place the dimes in your class' jar to gain points and the negative coins in the other class' jar making them lose points. Whichever class has the high score at the end of the week will be the winner of the Dime War. Last I checked, the juniors were in the lead with the seniors not far behind. Stop by sometime this week and show your support for the March of Dimes and help us promote prematurity awareness.

TKE Host 2nd Annual Turkey Bowl

Over the weekend on Saturday, November 6th Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) hosted the 2nd Annual Turkey Bowl to benefit the Daily Bread. Wondering what the Turkey Bowl is? Well, it's powder puff football played by the sororities on campus (Alpha Phi, Alpha Sigma Alpha, Chi Omega, and Delta Nu Kappa). The coaches and refs are members of TKE.

The first round games paired Alpha Phi against Alpha Sigma Alpha and Chi Omega against Delta Nu Kappa. Alpha Phi won against Alpha Sigma Alpha and Chi Omega won against Delta Nu Kappa. In the second round, Alpha Sigma Alpha played Delta Nu Kappa, and Alpha Phi (last year's champions) played Chi Omega (last year's runner-ups) once again in the championship game. The final score of the championship game was 14-12, Chi Omega.

I was lucky enough to play for Alpha Phi this year, and let me tell you, it was way more intense than I was expecting. I had played powder puff football in high school, so I kind of knew what I was doing. We had a few practices during two weeks before the game. Came up with silly names for our plays and enjoyed the time with our sisters. Then came game day...

Our first game went really well. Our offense had plenty of touchdowns and our defense was strong, preventing ASA from getting any touchdowns. We won that game and we were extremely proud with how well we all played. Next up, we were facing Chi Omega.

We knew the championship game was going to be harder. We had been watching the Chi-Os play against DNK and noting their plays. We could figure out who their key runners were and who they were throwing the ball to the most. As the game started Chi-Os offensive ripped through our defense and managed to get an early touchdown. Later on in the first half, the Chi-Os got a second touchdown, being up 14-0. We managed to come back in the second half. Our defense was stronger, and our offense was getting some long runs. In the end, we fell short because on both touchdowns we failed at getting the extra point. It was a great game over all. Really intense and I'm sure for the audience, enjoyable to watch.

Congrats to all the sororities that played and to Chi Omega, the 2010 Turkey Bowl Champions!

Time to Register for Classes

Today is the start of registration week. Make sure, if you haven't already, that you make an appointment with your adviser this week. In case you need to know, here's the dates you can register:
90+ credit hours and Honor Students (11/1 & 11/2)
54+ credit hours (11/3 &11/4)
All students (11/5 - 11/12)

With the new system, there have been some problems with registration. I know that I should be able to register today because I have 90 credit hours, but the new system was having issues and when I logged on I was unable to register. I stopped by the registrar's office and they were able to fix my transcript. I'm sure they'll be very busy all week in the registrar's office, but if you have a problem, I'm sure they'll be happy to help you out. I know it may be very frustrating because we all want our classes and want to make sure they don't fill up, but seeing it is a new system, we will have to deal with problems. Don't worry, you'll get your classes.

In case you're unsure of how to work NetClassroom, there is a link to a powerpoint that explains how to use it. Click here to visit the page. On the side there's an image of a laptop computer that say "NetClassroom Training." If you click on it, the powerpoint will download. The image at the side is what you're looking for on the website.

Also, if you're currently able to register, when you log on to NetClassroom, on the side will be a link to register for classes. It can also be found under the tab labeled classes. Here's where you go to add the classes you want for the spring semester.

After this semester of registration things should go a lot smoother next year. The kinks of NetClassroom should be worked out, the students will know how to navigate the site, and the advisers will know how the registration process works. It always sucks being the first to try out a new system, but someone's got to. Hopefully, things will go okay this week.

And, if you want to relieve some stress after this week. Check out these events going on:
  • Saturday, November 6th: The last home varsity football game will be at 1pm against Hope College. Also, TKE will be holding the 2nd Annual Turkey Bowl at 6pm on the football field.
  • Sunday, November 7th: Rake 'n Run - help out the members of the community by spending time raking with different groups on campus.
  • Saturday, November 13th: Alphi Phi host their Annual Red Dress Gala
  • Sunday, November 14th: Showcase concert in Dawson Auditorium at 3pm
  • Tuesday, November 23rd: Campus housing closes at 9.30pm for Thanksgiving Break
  • Sunday, November 28th: Campus housing opens at noon from Thanksgiving Break
There's not much left of the semester so make sure you get everything for your classes done, but don't forget to have fun and check out all the events happening on campus.

Family Weekend Recap

Happy Monday everyone! Over the weekend was Family Weekend! I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did.

I was very excited to spend the day with my parents...plus they took me out to lunch which was a nice change from Ritchie food. They also came over to the Alpha Phi complex for our Parent Ceremony so that they could see what we, the Phis, are all about.

I also got to spend some time in President Docking's private box at the football game. My mom is on the parent's board and was invited by President Docking up there to enjoy the game, so I got to stop by and check it out. Let me tell you, I would love to be able to watch every football game from his private box. I went up there during half time and stayed until the end of the game. His box is located just left of the 50 yard line giving you an awesome view of the field. Plus, the box is heated, making it much more enjoyable than sitting in the student section wearing six layers because it's cold out. Finally, there was food...really good food like shrimp, brownies, salad, etc. As a cherry on top of a great day, the football team won 58-31 against Kalamazoo.

Just a reminder, since the football team scored so many touchdowns at the game, TODAY (Monday, October 25th) you can receive 20% off merchandise at the bookstore. Make sure you stop by. I know I will. You can never have too much Bulldog gear.

Family Weekend - This Weekend!

Hello Adrian College Community! Family Weekend starts this Friday and there will be tons of activities going on throughout the weekend. There's something for everyone, so be sure to check out everything going happening on campus.

Family weekend is actually one of my favorite events Adrian College holds. Not only do I get to see my family, there's also a lot of activities going on throughout the weekend. Some of my favorite activities from the past years include:
  • The football game (which last year I got to watch from the President's box)
  • The inflatables and games located in the Merillat
  • Open skate in the Arrington Ice Arena
  • The theater productions
All these events (and more) will occur this year during family weekend. Be sure to check out the entire schedule of events by clicking here. And if you still need to register, fill out the form here.

I know I'm excited for family weekend and I hope you all are too. Be sure to check out all the awesome events happening on campus. Also stop by the Stadium Gates before the Varsity Football Game and visit me! I will be working a fund-raising booth sponsored by Adrian College Circle K. The booth is called "Happy Cents" and goes towards UNICEF's Six Cents Initiative. Stop by and donate your loose change and tell us why you're happy! See all of you this weekend!

Welcome Back from Break!

Hope you all had a wonderful break and enjoyed the time off from classes, clubs, and everything else. While some students were busy at home or on vacation, some were busy with Adrian College sports and activities. Here's what you missed over break:

On October 9th the Varsity Football team played Olivet College, winning 41-0. Too bad this wasn't a home game so we could get 20% off at the bookstore. Either way, it was great that our Bulldogs won the game over the weekend. This weekend the Varsity team plays away at DePauw, and the following weekend will be a home game against Kalamazoo College. Be sure to check out www.adrianbulldogs.com for more information on the football team and the other sports on campus.

The football team wasn't the only one busy this weekend. Both the ACHA D1 and D3 teams played, and they both won. ACHA D1 played Youngstown State on October 9th winning 9-0 and played Slippery rock on October 10th winning 4-3. The ACHA D3 Gold team won 7-4 against Northwood on October 9th and won 7-1 against Illinois State on October 10th. The ACHA D3 Black team won 7-4 against Delta College on October 9th making it a successful weekend for our hockey teams.

Now that you're caught up on a couple things that happened over break, be sure you don't miss out on any of the fun things taking place on campus this month. Remember, October is Adrian College month. See the previous post for all the activities going on this month and ways you can show your bulldog spirit! And of course, as more events come up, I'll be sure to report them.

It's Recruitment Week!

Adrian College offers a great opportunity for all members of the student body - Greek Life. This year I decided to go through sorority recruitment, and so far this experience has been a blast. I would completely recommend that all girls should go through recruitment. It's an amazing experience even if in the end, you don't end up joining a sorority.

Here's a little bit of background information on each sorority:

Alpha Phi (aka The Phis)
Alpha Phi was founded September 18, 1872. The Delta Eta chapter located on Adrian's campus was founded September 1961. The main objectives of this sorority are to promote growth in character, unity of feeling, sisterly affection, and social communion among all our members. Alpha Phi's main philanthropy is known as The Alpha Phi Foundation. The purpose of the Alpha Phi Foundation is to promote the awareness of women's heart disease. The Delta Eta chapter does this by hosting a Red Dress Gala every year with proceeds going to cardiac care. This is not the only philanthropy the Phis are active in. They have spent a lot of time with the seniors at Lynwood Manor. They have also been active in activities and groups on campus including the annual Party Sober Night, Student Government Association, varsity athletics, intramural athletics, Mortar Board, Order of Omega, and Residence Life.

Alpha Sigma Alpha (aka The ASAs)
Alpha Sigma Alpha was founded November 15, 1901. The chapter located on Adrian's campus was founded March 6, 1965. ASA's motto is "Aspire, Seek, Attain" meaning they consist of women who ASPIRE to career and personal achievement, women who SEEK the most from life and from themselves, women who ATTAIN levels of success beyond what they may have thought possible. Their main philanthropy consists of S. June Smith Center and Special Olympics. Although these are the main organizations, they do a lot of community service apart from their philanthropy. Some of these events including Rake-and-Run, the Humane Society, the HOPE Center, a local elderly group home, and Adopt-A-Road. Members of Alpha Sigma Alpha are in many of other organizations on campus as well consisting of Student Government Association, LINCS, varsity athletics, intramural athletics, Mortar Board, Order of Omega, theater, and many academic honoraries.

Chi Omega (aka The Chi-Os)
Chi Omega was founded April 5, 1895. Adrian College's chapter, the Mu Zeta chapter was founded April 16, 1961. Chi Omega offers members academic excellence, diversity, outstanding social programs and the opportunity to share in a unique sisterhood that extends beyond graduation and promotes friendship, sisterhood, leadership, and personal growth. Chi-Os main philanthropy is the Make a Wish Foundation. The Mu Zeta chapter holds a Make a Wish dinner every year with the proceeds going to a selected child to make their wish come true. The Chi-Os are also active with commuinty service. Places consist of the Hope Center, Bixby Hospital, and the Humane Society. Members of Chi Omega are also involved in many organization on campus including Student Government Association, Mortar Board, Theater, varsity athletics, Civitan, Panhellenic Council, LINCS, Circle K International, Residence Life, Campus Activities Network, and academic honorary societies.

Now that I've mentioned the history of each sorority, I'd like to share my experience so far. Being a junior I went into recruitment having a bit of an idea where I wanted to go. I have friends in all three of the sororities, so I knew a lot of information about each one that most girls learn during recruitment. Well, on Monday night after the first round of parties, I had absolutely no idea where I saw myself going. There were parts I loved about each sorority. I could see myself in any of them. Last night was the second round of parties. I asked some of the girls how they came to their decision when they went through recruitment. Most of them told me that the last night of recruitment, preference party, they finally felt at home with one specific sorority. They all gave me the advice: "listen to your heart." At the end of the night we had to rank our sororities in order of where we saw ourselves or which one we liked the best. It was extremely hard for me to do. On Thursday, we only get to go to two of the three sorority's parties. This is suppose to be in order to help the recruits narrow down to which one they see themselves in. I find it sad that tomorrow I won't get to meet with all the sororities again, but I know it's the only way I'm going to be able to narrow it down to that one place I can call home.

Convocation & Military Appreciation Day

Welcome back students, professors, and faculty. Hope all of you had a wonderful Labor Day weekend. Now that classes are back in session, here are some events happening on campus this week.

Today is the first convocation of the semester. Jonah Lehrer is the speaker. He is the author of the book "How We Decide." The convocation is going to take place in Herrick Chapel at noon. According to The Los Angeles Times, he is "captivating, accessible, and never dull, he talks about how we make decisions -- and how we can make better decisions." He should be a great speaker to start out the convocation series at Adrian this year.

On Saturday we have our first home football game against Defiance College. Although, that's not the only thing happening on Saturday. Adrian College has recently been named a Military Friendly School. To celebrate this achievement and to honor the local veterans and active service members, Adrian College is hosting a Military Appreciation Day. Below is the schedule of events.

A Little Introduction

It's the start of another school year on the campus of Adrian College. I'm Muffy Lavens and I will be letting you know about the upcoming events on campus this semester while interning in the Adrian College Public Relations Office. But first, I'd like to introduce myself.

This is my third year at Adrian College. I'm majoring in Psychology and minoring in Public Relations. I'm also involved in organizations on campus. I'm the bulletin editor for Adrian College Circle K International Club. I'm also hoping to get more involved in CAN (Campus Activities Network) this year. CAN provides so much for the students of Adrian, that I'd like to be involved in the planning that makes all the activities happen. I have also been a welcome week leader the past two years.

Aside from school I'm also involved in sports. I'm a figure skater and have been since I was about three years old. I currently skate at the Detroit Skating Club in Bloomfield Hills, MI. Although I'm a skater, I'm not on Adrian's synchronized skating team because my main focus on skating is ice dancing.

Now that you know a little about me, let's get into some events going on around campus during the next couple weeks.

Monday, September 6: Labor Day - meaning no classes!
Wednesday, September 8: Convocation at noon - The speaker is Jonah Lehrer, author of "How We Decide"

Also, if you're considering Greek Life, there are meetings and recruitment parties throughout the next two weeks.

For the guys:
Tuesday, September 7: Phi Kappa Sigma Info Night
Wednesday, September 8: Theta Chi Info Night
Friday, September 10: Theta Chi Recruitment Party
Saturday, September 11: Phi Kappa Sigma Recruitment Party
Sunday, September 12: Sigma Alpha Epsilon Info Night
Wednesday, September 15: Tau Kappa Epsilon Info Night
Thursday, September 16: Alpha Tau Omega Info Night
Friday, September 17: Tau Kappa Epsilon Recruitment Party
Saturday, September 18: Alpha Tau Omega Recruitment Party

For the girls:
Thursday, September 9: Meet the Sororities
Monday, September 13: First Round Party
Wednesday, September 15: Second Round Party
Thursday, September 16: Third Round Party
Saturday, September 18: Preference Party

This should give you an idea about what's going on around campus. Check soon for more updates.

MSU Coach Tom Izzo to address spring graduates

The Spring 2010 commencement speaker is Tom Izzo, men’s basketball head coach at Michigan State University. Izzo will be addressing the 202 graduates after his most recent run in the NCAA tournament.

Spring commencement at Adrian College is scheduled at 3 P.M. on Sunday, May 2, 2010, at the Multisport Performance Stadium. The rain location will be inside the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center. This event is free and open to the public.

Having recently completed his 15th year directing the Spartan program, head coach Tom Izzo has compiled an impressive list of accomplishments, including the 2000 NCAA National Championship, six regular-season Big Ten Championships, two Big Ten Tournament titles, six Final Four appearances, four National Coach of the Year awards and a Big Ten-best 13 straight NCAA Tournament appearances.

These accomplishments, however, are not what make Izzo one of the best in the game, but rather it is his insatiable desire to accomplish more.

With a career record of 364-146, it’s easy to see that Izzo knows how to win, but he also knows how to win the right way. In his 14 full years directing the Spartan program, 84 percent of his players who completed their eligibility also left with a degree. In the last 10 years, 31 Spartans have received their undergraduate degrees, including five each in 2001, 2003 and 2007.

In 15 seasons, Izzo has returned Michigan State to national prominence, placed his name in the NCAA record books and become a leader among college basketball coaches.

Izzo’s 364 wins are the fourth most by any coach in his first 15 seasons in the history of college basketball. In late November 2009, he passed his mentor Jud Heathcote (340 wins) to become MSU’s all-time winningest coach. In the NCAA Tournament, Izzo is at his best, winning at a clip of .745 to rank third among all active coaches with at least 10 tournament games coached.

Izzo has led MSU to six Final Four appearances in the last 12 seasons, becoming the only team to accomplish that feat between 1999 and 2010 and just the fourth school in college basketball history to do it in any 12-year span, including just the third since the tournament field expanded to 64 teams in 1985.

Furthermore, Izzo brings stability to Michigan State basketball. The 2009-10 season marks Izzo's 27th with the Spartans. He is the longest serving active Big Ten men's basketball head coach. He is also a leader among his peers, serving on the NABC Board of Directors and Executive Committee, the John R. Wooden Award Board of Governors and the USA Basketball Collegiate Committee.

In October 1990, Izzo was inducted into the Northern Michigan University Hall of Fame and was selected as an inductee into the Upper Peninsula Hall of Fame during the summer of 1998.

In 2001, Izzo received honorary degrees from both Northern Michigan and Michigan State, delivering the commencement address at both graduation ceremonies.

Izzo is also an active volunteer in the community. Among his many efforts, he is very active with Coaches Vs. Cancer, Sparrow Hospital, the Jimmy "V" Foundation and the Catholic Social Services/St. Vincent Home for Children in Lansing. In 2009, Izzo was presented the Coaches Vs. Cancer Champion Award, recognizing his work and leadership in the fight to save lives from cancer. In April 2010, Izzo began a one-year term as president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).

A native of Iron Mountain, Mich., Tom Izzo’s family includes his wife, Lupe, daughter, Raquel, and son, Steven.

Izzo will be presented with an honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters, by Adrian College President Jeffrey R. Docking.

Ribbons of Excellence Day Success

On Tuesday, April 13, 2010 students prepared their visual aids and went to work demonstrating their research. Many presentations represented the culmination of four years of work on their capstone projects. Rooms were filled with excitement as community members, faculty, staff, and students occupied every chair and lined every wall. Lunch was held for presenters and moderators in the Adrian Tobias room creating a very conference like schedule with built in networking opportunities. More motivating than the attendance to, or the structure of, this years Excellence Day was the glowing enthusiasm with which each presenter illustrated their project. When the final poster session closed it was time to head over to Dawson Auditorium where students where honored for their academic endeavors. With special guidance from visionary professors Dr. Claus and Dr. Hanley this event has evolved to become even better. The professional advantages of a local conference are many and the forum for sharing work is a truly excellent tool for students in terms of publication.

Ribbons of Excellence

Tuesday, April 13

To view the schedule Click here

ADRIAN, Mich. – On Tuesday, April 13, 2010, the Adrian College campus and surrounding communities will convene to celebrate the scholarly and creative activities of Adrian College students with the Second Annual Ribbons of Excellence Day. The purpose of this day is to encourage students to engage in the acquisition of new knowledge outside the classroom, and to act as a catalyst for student/faculty collaboration.

In 1887, the graduating seniors at Adrian College presented a cane in the form of a shepherd’s crook to the officers of the junior class. Symbolic of leadership and carved with the Latin motto for “No victory without work,” the cane has been handed down every year by the graduating class. Each class has also attached a ribbon to the cane with the names of its graduates listed on the ribbon.

In 2007, the academic community at Adrian College adopted the idea of the ribbons to represent its standards of excellence. From the long-standing tradition of the ribbons attached to the shepherd’s crook at graduation, these new ribbons of excellence have been developed to support the College’s mission statement. Just as the Latin inscription on the cane suggests, these ribbons of excellence cannot be achieved without hard work: caring for humanity and the world; learning throughout a lifetime; thinking critically; crossing boundaries and disciplines and developing creativity. The College has defined these ideas as:

Caring for humanity and the world includes making socially responsible decisions, providing service to local and global communities and interacting positively with persons of diverse cultures and backgrounds.

Learning throughout a lifetime consists of continuing to ask important questions, pursuing knowledge in each new age and remaining open to new learning experiences.

Thinking critically is developing critical habits of the mind, exploring multiple points of view; raising thoughtful questions and identifying problems and solutions.

Crossing boundaries and disciplines includes developing literacy in multiple fields, personifying the liberal arts experience and making connections across disciplines.

Developing creativity is engaging in creative arts, developing creative talents and skills and recognizing and employing figurative expression.

Ribbons of Excellence Day 2010 will be held all day long in various parts of campus on Tuesday, April 13, beginning at 8:30 A.M. and ending at 6:45 P.M. Being given in relation to the ribbons of excellence described above are numerous presentations.

Following the presentations, the Honors Ceremony will take place in Dawson Auditorium. This event is held each spring to recognize students who have received special accolades. At this time, the list of students earning Scholastic Honors is published, and departmental and other awards are presented.

The Ribbons of Excellence Day is free and open to the public however the Honors Ceremony is by invite only.

Rich Like Them

Ryan D'Agostino

Author Rich Like Them

Attend the
James Borland Convocation Series this coming Wednesday, March 17, at noon in Dawson Auditorium. This event’s special guest speaker is author Ryan D'Agostino.

D'Agostino is the author of “Rich Like Them: Unlocking the Secrets of Regular (But Very Rich) Americans” and is editor and writer at “Esquire” magazine.

D'Agostino wanted to know how the extremely rich in America got that way. So he asked. In his book, “Rich Like Them” he traveled to the richest zip codes in the country, knocking on doors, notepad in hand. The people who spoke with him -- hardworking everyday people -- offered generous advice, much of it quirky, all of it timeless. The kind of advice you can only get by asking for it.

In his book, D'Agostino takes care not to offer a "get rich quick" scheme nor does he celebrate indulgence and excess. If anything, he has written a brilliant antidote to that very way of life. Charming, readable and very wise, D'Agostino's book is about what it takes to find good ideas -- to see the opportunities that exist all around you.

Ryan D'Agostino is the articles editor at “Esquire”, where he works closely with writers, pitching, assigning, writing, and editing stories, and giving voice and shape to the magazine. D'Agostino has also written for “Money”, “The New Yorker”, and “MBA Jungle”, a magazine he helped start while in his twenties. He also appears frequently in the media, including on CNN and “The Today Show.”

This Convocation Series is presented to you by the Adrian College Office of the Vice President and various lectureship funds. This event is free and open to the public. Dawson Auditorium is located on Charles St.

# 1 Up-and-Coming Baccalaureate in Midwest

In its 2010 edition of America’s Best Colleges, U.S. News & World Report ranks Adrian College as the number one Up-and-Coming Baccalaureate College in the Midwest for the second year in a row. The College is also listed as 23rd in the Midwest region in its “Best Baccalaureate Colleges” section. Ranking information can be found at www.usnews.com.

“Our selection as the number one Up-and-Coming College in the Midwest strongly affirms the changes we continue to make at the College,” said Dr. Jeffrey R. Docking, president of Adrian College. “Adrian College continues its rapid ascent as one of the premier private, selective colleges in the United States. Students and alumni should be proud of how our rapid growth and expansion has resulted in more highly qualified students.”

According to U.S. News, top college officials identified 77 colleges and universities throughout the country as schools that have recently made the most promising and innovative changes in academics, faculty, students, campus, or facilities.

These 77 institutions were ranked with other schools within the same categories used for the regular U.S. News rankings. Under the baccalaureate college category, Adrian was named as the number one school to watch in the Midwest.

For the past two years, Adrian College has been categorized differently, moving from “Best Liberal Arts Colleges” to “Best Baccalaureate Colleges.” There are 320 baccalaureate colleges within four regions: North, South, Midwest, and West. The Midwest category consists of 48 schools.

The U.S. News identifies baccalaureate colleges as those institutions that “focus on undergraduate education and offer a range of degree programs – in the liberal arts, which account for fewer than half of their bachelor’s degrees, and in professional fields such as business, nursing, and education.”

The College continues to thrive with exceptionally qualified students and an experienced faculty in the top of their fields. The campus community is proud of this accomplishment and is honored to be ranked in such prestigious categories.

“We thank U.S. News for recognizing the spectacular improvements at Adrian College in recent years and how these improvements translate into higher academic credentials in our student body,” said Docking.

The keynote address will be given by Lolita Hernandez. Hernandez writes poetry and fiction which draw from her Trinidad and St. Vincent heritage, and are driven by her experience as a UAW worker. She was in the profession for 33 years, 21 of them at the Cadillac Plant in Detroit.

She is the author of “Autopsy of an Engine and Other Stories From the Cadillac Plant” which won a 2005 PEN Beyond Margins Award. She is also the author of two collections of poems: “Quiet Battles” and “Snakecrossing.” Her work appears in many literary publications, and she reads from her works in the Detroit area and nationally.

Declaration Day!

Freshmen and Sophomores it is time to declare a major.

Friday, March 26, 2010

Aside from the alliteration Declaration Day is designed to encourage first and second year students to declare their majors.

By declaring a major early on, students have the opportunity to create an identity with other students who share common interests. It also allows advisors to support students in their academic progress.

“It’s a fun way for students to engage the mission of Adrian College and begin living the Ribbons of Excellence,” said Dr. Agnes Caldwell, dean and vice president of academic affairs.

First and second year students who decide to declare their major can pick up a declaration form in the registrar’s office, career planning office, Caine Student Center, with their advisor, or print it off the registrar’s webpage at http://www.adrian.edu/registrar/index.php .

Declaration Day will take place in the Caine Student Center from 9 A.M. to 3 P.M. Students who are declaring their major are asked to bring their forms to Caine that day and participate in the activities.

Participating students will receive a free t-shirt and have the chance to win numerous prizes including gift cards to local businesses, an iPod and a Wii. We encourage all students, faculty and staff to support these first and second year students who declare their major at Declaration Day 2010.

Bruiser will also be at Declaration Day to declare his major and he hopes to see you there!

Switchfoot is known for their energetic live shows where the three guitarists in the line-up often operate simultaneously.

After early successes in the Christian rock scene, Switchfoot first gained mainstream recognition with the inclusion of four of their songs in the 2002 movie “A Walk to Remember.” This recognition led to their major label debut, “The Beautiful Letdown”, which was released in 2003. It went on to sell over 2.6 million copies and produced the band's best-known singles, "Meant to Live" and "Dare You to Move".

According to Jon Foreman, lead vocals and guitar, the name "Switchfoot" is a surfing term.

"We all love to surf and have been surfing all our lives so to us, the name made sense,” he said. “To switch your feet means to take a new stance facing the opposite direction. It's about change and movement, a different way of approaching life and music.”

The band has completed their seventh studio album, “Hello Hurricane”, which released in North America on November 10, 2009.
