Adrian College Students Demonstrate Mock Drunk Driving Accident

A group of students in Professor Pat Quinlan’s advertising and promotion management class will be putting on a mock drunk driving accident next Wednesday, Oct. 15. The event will take place in the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center parking lot from 4-5 P.M.

The class is participating in the 2008-09 National Student Advertising Case Competition developed by the American Advertising Federation. The sponsor for this year’s case is the Century Council, a group comprised of major manufacturers in the spirits industry with a mission of encouraging responsible drinking behavior. The ultimate goal of the $10,000,000 campaigns is to bring about a reduction in binge drinking on college campuses. The campaigns are being developed by AAF collegiate chapters across the country.

The group, which has developed and planned the mock drunk driving accident, hopes to bring awareness to the local campus community.

“We want to increase the awareness of binge drinking and its dangers on a college campus,” said group member Elysia Norris.

A “mock accident” is the recreation of an actual automobile accident including most of the physical and emotional outcomes. There are two objectives of this event. The first is to allow the group to pretest the potential effectiveness of this communication tool as part of a national campaign strategy. Second, this group believes that our campus community would benefit from the sobering effects of a well-staged mock accident.

The Adrian City fire and police departments and Lenawee Ambulance and rescue team as well as Life Flight will be on hand acting as if the accident were real. Two cars, which are being donated from a local junk yard, will be positioned in the scene of an accident. Five “actors” who are other Adrian College students will act as the victims. One car will contain a drunk driver and passenger and the other car will contain three victims.

The fire department will cut open one of the vehicles. One victim will die at the scene, one will be lifted in Life Flight, and one will be carried to the ambulance. The driver will also be arrested at the scene. The group of students putting on this mock accident includes Elysia Norris, Ray Knox, Rob Magyar, Mark Eberline, Kate Walsh, and Jenna Kloster. The students will narrate the story as it is happening and afterwards they will talk to the crowd about the effects and statistics of binge drinking and drunk driving.

All students and community members are encouraged to attend. This event is free and open to the public. Donuts and juice will be provided to all spectators. Further information about this event may be obtained by contacting Professor Pat Quinlan at
pquinlan@adrian.edu.

ACES Program

Attention first-year first-generation Adrian College Students

The Wal-Mart College Success Award grant is being used to establish the Adrian College Educational Success Project (ACES). ACES is designed to increase the success of first-generation college students by providing a close mentoring relationship between first-generation students and faculty/ staff members who were first-generation students themselves during the students first year of college.

Successful applicants (called 2008 ACES cohorts) will be expected to complete two years of the two semester program. During the first year, ACES cohorts will meet a minimum of eight times each semester with your faculty mentor, attending eight workshops, three of which will be during the first semester on the dates listed below, and completing two surveys based on a Habits of Mind workbook that will be the focus of the workshops and mentoring program. Upon completion of the program requirements at the end of each semester, students will be awarded a $350 voucher for textbooks through the Arrington Bookstore. During the second year of the project, the 2008 ACES cohort will partner with faculty presenters to co-facilitate the second series of Habits of Mind workshops, presented for the 2009 ACES cohort.

Only first generation first-year college students are eligible for the program. Qualified students need to please complete the ACES student application and return to Mary Ann Bone in the Administration Building by Sept. 29.

Welcome Back and JAY BLACK!

Welcome Back Everyone!

If we haven't met, my name is Katie Watkins - and I am the Student Activities Coordinator here at Adrian College. One of the main parts of my job is that I plan events (like Homecoming, Family Weekend, etc.) and advise SGA and CAN (the Student Government Association and Campus Activities Network), the groups that plan and organize many of the different activities that occur on campus.

I decided that hanging fliers and making signs is good, but starting a blog could be even better! This way I can update YOU about activities as they come up - and you can have it all of that information at your fingertips.

Jay Black started life as a high school teacher. He was happy and he was talented: in six years of teaching, Mr. Black racked up two local teacher of the year nominations and one nomination for the prestigious Disney award for excellence in teaching. Jay always wanted to try standup, though, and it wasn't long before he took the same high energy act he used in the classroom into the night clubs. It was an easy transition: After entertaining teenagers (the hardest audience in the world) every day, five shows a day for years and years, the nightclub audiences seemed tame by comparison. "It was like swinging two bats in the on-deck circle", Jay says with a grin, "teaching high school was the best education I could get on how to be a stand-up comic." Jay quickly shot up the ranks of the Philadlephia stand-up scene, going from his first open-mic to his first paid gig much more quickly than the norm. Within his first year, he had performed in such notable clubs as The Comedy Zone, Rascals, Dangerfields, Stand-Up NY, Carolines, and many others. He got to open for luminaries such as Jim Norton, Otto and George, Ross Bennet, Victoria Jackson, and Bob Nelson. Jay also began performing at colleges and universities around the country. He's been heard on countless college radio programs and profiled in nearly a dozen college newspapers. In 2003, Jay won Delaware's comedian of the year award and was profiled on Comcast. He also won the regional tournament of the Captain's of Comedy contest and had his comedy shown on UPN. In 2004, Jay won the first ever "Make it or Break it" contest on Philadelphia's number one radio station WMMR. Recently, Jay has been tapped as a writer on the Richie Byrne Show, a comedy revue starring notables for Sex and the City and the Sopranos. He's also been added as a featured columnist on both collegehumor.com and thecollegeweb.com, two sites that boast thousands of hits from college students every day. On stage, Jay still exudes the cool of every student's favorite teacher. Jay is always friendly and accessible, even when he's pointing out bits about our daily life that usually make us blush. He exudes likeability while never losing command of the audience.

Come on out and enjoy some Comedy!

Have a great week everyone!

-Katie
