Bruiser's Coronation

Last Friday Adrian College held the Official Debut of the new live mascot Bruiser.
The young English Bulldog was the center of attention at the Men's Hockey Game.

Student Government President Kourtney Price introduced and crowned the puppy before Bruiser made the ceremonial puck drop.

Bruiser drew so much attention
that Arrington Ice Arena
recorded a record crowd of 1,054 fans

The Men's Hockey Team recorded
a 10 to 3 win over Lawrence.

Men's Hockey Wins 10-3

Under the spotlight Bruiser was 'knighted' and celebrated signifying the beginning of his reign as the schools mascot. A number of other attractions were available in his honor including contests and swag for the present students and community. Plenty of dog related humor was used and everything from the concessions to the free giveaways were phrased in Bruiser's terms.

Adrian College’s new live mascot introduced

Recital Series to be Presented by the Music Department Faculty

Clarinetist and Adrian College faculty member Shannon Ford (pictured right) presents a concert of enjoyable and exciting music by French, Danish, and American composers on Thursday, Jan. 28 at 8PM in Dawson Auditorium.

Bassoonist Susan Nelson(pictured left), double bassist Derek Weller(pictured right), pianist Pamela Ashmore(left) and percussionist Scott Kretzer(right) will add their talents to the program, and a reception will follow this free performance.

In addition to her work at Adrian College, Ford is the principal clarinetist of the Lima Symphony, part of the flute-clarinet-piano trio, “Mirepoix”, and has been featured on several CD's, including the recently-released “Toledo Clarinets.”

She has performed on numerous occasions

for WGTE's "Live from FM91" radio program and performs occasionally with the Toledo Symphony and Michigan Opera Theatre.

Dawson Auditorium is located on the Adrian College campus off of Charles St. This event is free and open to the public.

This Febuary Expect Increases in Internet Bandwidth

Following an extensive usage study and cost analysis, Adrian College will be moving forward with a significant investment in its Internet connectivity infrastructure. This investment will double the existing bandwidth capacity to the campus community.

"We are pleased to double the bandwidth which will increase internet connectivity and usage on campus,” said Dr. Agnes Caldwell, vice president and dean of academic affairs at the College. “This is a major investment in the technology of campus and everyone should see improvements.”

The increased bandwidth should greatly improve the user experience at the campus, including that for wireless connectivity.

This investment is precipitated by the increased demands on the existing infrastructure due to growth of the student population as well as the increased data content being accessed.

“The main reason for the increase is due to the campus doubling in size over the past five years,” said Steve Stempien, director of information services at the College. “President Docking also recognized the growing trend with students being internet needy and made the logical choice as it was necessary to keep up with the growing population and the students’ needs.”

Stempien says the secondary reason is because students use the internet for everything today.

“Students can access the internet for all types of entertainment as well as doing research for school,” he said. “They can play games, watch videos, social network, and video chat with friends and family; the possibilities are endless. The internet is also available on their cell phones and video game systems so it’s always being used across campus and we needed to keep up with the massive activity.”

President Docking to Speak on Martin Luther King, Jr.

President Jeffrey R. Docking will be presenting
"Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: The Relevance of Nonviolence in Today's World"

Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 4 P.M. at the Adrian Public Library.

This is the first event Adrian College and the Adrian Public Library will be offering in the 2010 Library Lecture series.

“Martin Luther King's message of non-violence and equal opportunity for all people is as relevant today as it was during his lifetime,” said Docking. “This great American represents the highest ideals of American democracy.”

President Docking earned his doctorate in social ethics from Boston University. His dissertation was concentrated on the work and life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The goals of this lecture series partnership are to strengthen the College's connections to the public library and the Adrian community, enable faculty to provide service to the community, contribute to the Adrian Public Library adult education programs, and foster interdisciplinary relations among faculty and between faculty and community organizations. This lectureship will offer 2-3 public lectures per season. All lectures are free and open to the public.

A pre-game ceremony is scheduled to begin at approximately 7:45 P.M. Bruiser will make his first public appearance at that time appearing at center ice to do a ceremonial puck drop. In addition, a special presentation will be made signifying the beginning of Bruiser’s reign at Adrian College.

Throughout the evening there will be many dog themed giveaways, contests and prizes. Some of the things taking place include: temporary tattoos, opportunities to meet Bruiser nose-to-nose, specials at the concession stand and unique intermission contests. Be sure to bring your cameras to capture all the evening has to offer.

The opening faceoff is set to begin at 8 P.M. For tickets, please contact Kate Hamilton at 517-265-5161 ext. 5011. Tickets are $10 for reserved seating and $5 for standing room. Reserved seats are limited so please act quickly to ensure a great view of the action. Standing room tickets will be available at the door as well as any remaining reserved seats.

FEM hosts The Vagina Monologues

Come support Adrian College's Feminist Empowerment Movement (FEM) by attending The Vagina Monologues, performed by AC women, and directed and produced by AC juniors Emma Donelson and Angelica Lopez. The Vagina Monologues is an award winning play by women's activist Eve Ensler.

Performances are February 4-5 (Thursday and Friday). Doors will open at 7:00pm, and the show will begin at 7:30pm.

Tickets are $5/general admission, $3 if you provide a valid student I.D. or food/clothing donation, or free to students who provide both I.D. and a donation.

All proceeds will benefit the Catherine Cobb Domestic Violence Shelter, SAFER (a group that works to improve campus sexual assault policies), and the women and children in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

We are supported by the V-Day 2010 Campaign.

Merchandise will be sold, and there will be a silent art auction featuring the art of Adrian College women and student artists. Donations are welcome!
